International Association for Landscape Ecology

International Working Group on Forest Landscape Ecology IALE-IUFRO

The International IALE-IUFRO Working Group on Forest Landscape Ecology established in April 2007, during the IALE World Congress in Wageningen under the IALE (International Association of Landscape Ecology) and the IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) Landscape Ecology Group (IUFRO-8.01.02) umbrellas .

Since 2007, members of IALE-IUFRO WG are able to exchange experiences and share common needs and interests to build up on the strength of both networks. As species and ecosystems are not contained by political boundaries, international cooperation is essential to ensure their preservation and sustainable management. This group serves as an international platform for advocating and updating research and management on forest landscapes.
What is gained by combining the two groups from the IUFRO & IALE communities?
Forestry was the first major field to recognize the importance of landscape ecology, and today foresters widely know, use, and even develop landscape ecology principles based on experience and science. Landscape ecology is an exciting field for researchers and managers together. In this sense, landscape ecology is viewed as the nexus of ecology, resource management, and land use planning. It is within this framework of synergy and integration that the Group works.
The vision and experience that the different communities bring to this open working group will continue to increase the opportunities to solve critical problems and to further develop key theoretical principles nurture by interchange. Cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural backgrounds are required in order to devise a more realistic and relevant foundation for landscape ecology and forest management integration.
We also have links with the FragFornet network: a platform for researchers, stakeholders, policy makers and the public to exchange ideas, knowledge, data, experiences and results on the loss on biodiversity in the remaining native forests of South America.
