July 2015 in Portland, Oregon, USA

The 9th IALE World Congress will be organized as a joint event of the International Association of Landscape Ecology World Congress (WC) and the US chapter of IALE (US-IALE).

Lead Organizers will be Vivek Shandas, Portland State University, and Anita Morzillo, Oregon State University. The Lead Organizing Committee will include Robert Scheller, Jennifer Allen, and John Reuter and, as liaison between the local organizers and IALE International, our General Secretary Thomas Edwards. Robert Scheller and Anita Morzillo co-hosted the 2011 US-IALE meeting in Portland. Jennifer Allen is the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS). Thomas Edwards is Secretary General of IALE International and ran the US-IALE 2009 meeting at Snowbird.

Portland offers numerous amenities that we believe will provide an excellent and efficient meeting experience and will attract a large contingent of landscape ecologists. The city is widely recognized as a modern ‘Ecotopia’ because of its commitment to sustainability and progressive land use planning. Portland is rich in parks and has numerous outdoor recreation opportunities, which will be instrumental in identifying regional resources for landscape ecologists to explore.

For the time slot July 2015 we can (almost) guarantee beautiful sunny weather. General outline of WC events: a Sunday afternoon arrival is assumed, including an ice breaker, 4 full days of meetings with 10-14 parallel sessions and a permanent poster exhibition, a Gala dinner, excursions to nearby sites, a scientific excursion program with visits to nearby landscape-related features or conservation areas, and multiple workshops.

Scientific Excursions:  Portland has ready access to some of the most diverse and scenic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest and we foresee many informative field trips. Some examples: A tour of the Columbia River Gorge; assessment of urban growth boundaries, successes and challenges; managing growth along the Oregon coast and Willamette watershed; touring disturbance recovery at Mt. St. Helens; visiting the HJ Andrews LTER Site.

Shorter excursions may include visits to Forest Park, Bonneville Dam, bicycling along the Willamette River, and others.

Workshops: PSU has the computer labs necessary to conduct up to six concurrent workshops on the Saturday and Sunday before the event begins.
