Good start into my first year as president of IALE

Dear IALE members,

The first 9 months of my Presidency have been devoted to visiting various chapters (IALE Germany, IALE UK, IALE China and US IALE). I just returned from the US IALE meeting in Newport, RI, where I met a lot of motivated members that are eager to spread landscape-ecological principles in governmental agencies, private companies and Universities. Currently more than 20 chapters all over the world spread the ideas of Landscape Ecology. Thanks to this sometimes complicated regional structure our society is one of the few in the world that does not only talk about up-scaling and international understanding but lives it and bridges the gap between regions, continents and the entire world. We see encouraging signs that our Society is able to make great contributions in emerging fields like Urban Ecology, participatory landscape management, valuating Ecosystem Services or Landscape Genetics.

IALE International works for YOU as an individual:

In the last years 80-90% of the fees for IALE International were returned to the regions in the form of

  • Early career support for conferences / conference loans
  • Set-up of new regions

I am also proud to mention that in the last three years no IALE funds had to be used for travel of Executive board members. In the past months IALE International supported and will continue to support several early career scientists to travel to international conferences. There are several requests for new Chapters and the IALE EC is keen to support their activities. As announced earlier it is our wish to see more interaction among the chapters. Thus the new Web page is designed to accommodate regional inputs. We kindly ask the Webmasters of the regions to contact Benjamin Burkhard and to get instructions on how to upload regional information.

With best regards
Felix Kienast
President IALE International
