Calling Students & Early Career Researchers

The completion of a PhD thesis often provides an excellent opportunity to review a key topic, provide new perspectives and develop new methodology. This is often a time where significant new insights into a research area are provided. The Landscape Ecology journal encourages students and early career researchers (ECRs) to publish articles in the form of reviews or perspectives papers. Therefore, for every article accepted in these two categories with students and ECRs (defined as being within one year of award of their PhD degree) as the first author, Springer Nature offers:

  • A voucher entitling the author to free access to any Springer publication in eBook form (up to a maximum value of 250 Euros/US dollars, and maximum one per year) in perpetuity.
  • Article made freely accessible for 8 weeks after online first publication.

Please see our Submission Guidelines for how to apply for these incentives if you are a student or ECR author.

Lifetime Book Discount

Would you like a discount off Springer books? Springer Nature book and journal authors receive a 40% lifetime discount!

SN Loves Preprints

Springer Nature loves preprints so much that we even streamlined our policy on preprint sharing to make preprint sharing easier for authors!

Does Landscape Ecology journal accept preprints? YES!

Is it acceptable to upload a draft—incomplete or final version—of your article which has not yet been peer reviewed for formal publication to a preprint server? YES!

You can even post your paper prior to, or concurrently with, submission to the Landscape Ecology journal.

When submitting your preprint, it is very important to mention that it is a preprint in your cover letter and provide the name of the preprint server and a link to the preprint.

Please read Springer Nature’s self-archiving policy for more details.

What are Compact and Transformative Agreements?

Compact (pre Plan S) and Transformative (since Plan S) agreements are read and publish deals between Springer Nature and countries or institutions.

To date Springer Nature has 9 Compact Agreements (Austria, Finland, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Qatar, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands). Springer Nature is also very proud to have just finalized the world's largest transformative open access agreement with Germany called Projekt DEAL. The former compact agreement with Max Planck Institute is now included in Projekt DEAL.

As the world’s largest Open Access publisher and also a proponent of the “big deal” consortium packages, Springer Nature is strategically balancing both traditional subscription content and Open Access content to maximize dissemination through multiple channels, anticipate market trends, support funding mandates and offer authors the widest array of publishing model options.  For stakeholders committed to Open Access publishing, we are entering into innovative arrangements that offer a variety of ways to access OA funding. For stakeholders committed to subscription models or without sufficient resources to support article processing charges, we continue to pursue subscriptions, consortia licenses and third-party distribution. These key regions represent a different experience with respect to the adoption of OA models and principles. For instance, Germany (Projekt DEAL) and the UK (Compact) are relatively progressive with respect to Open Access mandates, while the US and Japan do not have centralized OA policies.

What does this mean for potential Landscape Ecology authors and Springer Nature journal authors?

If a corresponding author is based in a country whose affiliation participates in a Springer Compact Agreement or Projekt DEAL, the author will most likely be expected to publish their manuscript open access at no additional charge to the authors of the paper.

Submit to us!

The Landscape Ecology journal publishes theoretical, methodological, and empirical studies that help better understand and improve the ecology and sustainability of landscapes. The journal welcomes manuscripts that focus on: (1) Flows and redistributions of organisms, materials, and energy in landscape mosaics; (2) Landscape connectivity and habitat fragmentation; (3) Ecosystem services in dynamic landscapes; (4) Landscape history and legacy effects; (5) Landscape and climate change interactions (particularly landscape-based mitigation and adaptation approaches); (6) Landscape sustainability and resilience; (7) Ecological impacts and mechanisms of land use/land cover change; (8) Scaling relations of patterns and processes across landscapes; (9) Innovative methods in landscape analysis and modeling; and (10) Accuracy assessment and uncertainty analysis of landscape studies.

The Landscape Ecology journal publishes several types of papers such as Research Articles, Perspectives, Reviews, and Short Communications. As timely assessments of key topics in landscape ecology are critically important for advancing the theory and practice of the field, the journal encourages the submission of reviews and perspective articles that synthesize existing knowledge and ideas, critique existing perspectives and approaches, and explore new research frontiers. We also offer incentives to students and Early Career Researchers when their Perspectives or Reviews paper is accepted for publication. In addition, Short Communications are designed for rapid publications of novel research results as well as new methods and techniques.

The Landscape Ecology journal is the key barometer of how the field is progressing and, therefore, accepts the best papers that represent your science and your profession. Learn more about the Landscape Ecology journal and submit your paper today!

Feel free to contact Editor-in-Chief Dr. Jianguo (Jingle) Wu (Jingle.Wu@asu.edu) or Springer Editor Takeesha Moerland-Torpey (takeesha.moerland-torpey@springer.com) for details!
