Job opportunity in Geography

Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities. The University draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific disciplines including engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Geosciences at Ruhr-University Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor (chair, W3) in

Analysis and Planning of Urban Environments

to start 1 April 2019.

The University is searching for a faculty member with international visibility, excellent research achievements, broad teaching experience, and a proven ability to apply independently for research funds.

The future holder of the position will contribute significantly to the ongoing process of focussing research activities in the field “Transformation of Metropolitan Spaces”, which is the core area of interdisciplinary research at the Department of Geography. This includes active participation in the UAR (University Alliance Ruhr) field of competence “Metropolitan Research”. Fundamental or applied research regarding sustainability and resilience of urban areas are expected to be of central importance. Preferably, research is oriented towards the following areas:

  • Ecosystem services and nature based solutions in the frame of integrated city development
  • Environmental citizen science and participation

Teaching has to be performed within the study programs of Geography (B.A., B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and in the international double degree program “Transformation of Urban Landscapes” (M.Sc.). This includes field trips as well.
The successful candidate holds an outstanding PhD in the field of environmental analysis of metropolitan spaces. A degree in Geography or related subjects, substantial experiences in GIS-supported analysis and visualization are mandatory. Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. Habilitation) or significant post-doctoral research contributions and teaching experience are as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB and the department of Geography.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunity employer. Complete applications (including cover letter/motivation letter, CV, teaching experience, list of publications as well as copies of 2 – 3 exemplary publications, certificates/diplomas, record of external funding, and research and teaching) should be sent in electronic form (PDF document) to Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Prof. Dr. Harald Zepp (e-mail: geodekanat(at)rub.de), no later than 30 September 2018.
