This is a reminder that the IALE Diversity & Inclusion Committee has prepared a Draft Meeting Code of Conduct to apply to all events sponsored by IALE: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Llw8Uok-i3x6evWaK4-jaDkMjSy-Q9Nol5M0E17uYF4/edit

The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to outline the acceptable and unacceptable behavior at the World Congress and all other IALE-sponsored meetings and events, whether virtual in person. We propose that all attendees at future IALE World Congresses will be required to agree to this code of conduct before attending. In addition, as a condition of receiving IALE funding for meetings, regional chapters will be required to agree to the code of conduct and to share it with their meeting attendees.

The International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) is excited to announce the 2023 IALE World Congress will take place in Nairobi, Kenya (see Magical Nairobi), from 10^th – 15^th, July 2023.  The IALE World Congress occurs every four years and is the premier event for landscape ecologists worldwide to address topics in landscape ecology that range from local to global in scale. During the World Congress, landscape ecologists from public, private, and non-profit sectors will address a broad spectrum of environmental challenges and their potential solutions. The 2023 World Congress will be a hybrid (online/in person) event and it is for the first time being hosted in the Global South. 

The World Congress theme is ‘Transboundary Resource Management, Climate Change and Environmental Resilience’.  The World Congress will include plenaries, symposium, oral sessions, posters sessions, a social dinner, and field trips. It is jointly hosted by Kenyatta University (KU), Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), National Museum of Kenya (NMK), Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation Institute, University of Nairobi (UON), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and in collaboration with the African-Chapter of IALE (Africa-IALE).

Nairobi is an exceptionally beautiful and exceptional city (see Magical Nairobi).  The planned post conference excursions include: Nairobi National Park,  Karura Forest Nature trails, The National Museums, Kakamega forest (‘Time has stood still for the Kakamega Forest, a remnant of the rain forest that stretched all across Central Africa’) and Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve (a complex of marine and tidal habitats along the Kenya’s north coast with rich and diverse bird life, fish, turtles and dugongs). Furthermore, Kenya is well known for the Great Rift Valley (Great Rift Valley).  July is an excellent time to visit Kenya because it is the dry season and wildlife will be easier to see.

What: In this 3-part modeling miniseries, we will take a wide-ranging look at State-and-Transition-Simulation-Models (STSMs) and use the LANDFIRE BpS models as a launching point for inquiry about ecosystem change over time. We will communicate practical ways to use STSM in real-life research, management, and academia. There will be 15-20 min at the end of each section for Q & A.

June 2 - Part 1: Kori Blankenship* (LANDFIRE Fire Ecologist) will discuss the basics of (STSMs), introduce the LANDFIRE BpS models and share resources for both novice and intermediate state-and-transition modelers.  

June 9 - Part 2: Leonardo Frid (Systems Ecologist at Apex Resource Management Solutions) will showcase real-life STSM applications with the ST-Sim package for SyncroSim, demonstrate how to use both the Graphical User Interface and rsyncrosim R package and discuss different approaches for applying state and transition modeling tools in real-life management scenarios.  

June 16 - Part 3: Randy Swaty (LANDFIRE Ecologist) & Dr. Priscilla NyamaiNyamai (Asst. Professor, Grand Valley State Univ.) will discuss how integrating STSMs in the classroom can be useful for conceptualizing ecosystem changes.
